Following a successful UCAS application, the next stage of your application to the BA (Hons) Musical Theatre Performance course is to audition. ​ Information below highlights the audition process. The Hammond does not charge a fee to audition.

First Round – Self-Tape Audition​ 

For the first round, you will submit a self-tape. The self tape is assessed by the course Leader and audition panel. 

Second Round - In-Person Audition​ 

If successful, you will then be asked to attend an in-person audition at The Hammond where you will be required to demonstrate your abilities in dance, acting and singing. This is also the opportunity for the audition panel to investigate your suitability for the course and training potential.   

You will be sent out all information about what the Audition Day will look like, including what classes to expect and what you can do to prepare. You will also be allocated an audition date.

Monday, 22nd February 2027 

Saturday, 13th March 2027 

Saturday, 17th April 2027 

Tuition fees for September 2026 are expected to be £9,790*. This is the maximum tuition fee and is set by the government.   

* The tuition fee shown above is for 2026 entry for UK students to undergraduate programmes and is still subject to parliamentary procedure. In England and Wales, tuition fees for home undergraduate students are subject to the government fee cap, which the government has announced will be £9,790 for the 2026/27 academic year and £10,050 for the 2027/28 academic year (subject to parliamentary approval). Fees may change in line with inflation and/or any adjustments to the government fee cap. These changes may affect fee levels for continuing students for subsequent years of study.  

The Hammond’s BA (Hons) Musical Theatre Performance course is eligible for Student Loan funding England*. Please find information on how to apply here.  

*For entry in September 2026, our courses do not have designation for student support from the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales. This means that students ordinarily domiciled in Wales are not eligible for student loans.  

A tuition fee loan covers your tuition costs. The Maintenance Loan is available to help students meet their living costs throughout the teaching year. The amount you can get depends on your household income.

Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)   

As a higher education student living in England, you can apply for a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) if you have a disability. This includes the following:  

• long-term health condition  

• mental health condition  

• specific learning difficulty, e.g. dyslexia, dyspraxia  

You must meet the definition of disability under the Equality Act 2010. The support you receive depends on your individual needs and not on household income. Details on eligibility and how to apply can be found at gov.uk/disabled-students-allowances-dsas.  

First Round – Self-Tape Audition​ 

For the first round, you will submit a self-tape which will require:-​ 

• One song – a 1-2 minute cut of a musical theatre song. Your chosen song should show off your voice and your ability to act through song.  ​ 

• One monologue – 1 minute, in your own accent, own choice.   

• A 1 minute submission of a musical theatre routine of your choice.   

• You will also be sent a short set of exercises to record for the self-tape. 

The self tape is assessed by the course Leader and audition panel. 

Second Round - In-Person Audition​ 

If successful, you will then be asked to attend an in-person audition at The Hammond where you will be required to demonstrate your abilities in dance, acting and singing. This is also the opportunity for the audition panel to investigate your suitability for the course and training potential.   

You will be sent out all information about what the Audition Day will look like, including what classes to expect and what you can do to prepare. You will also be allocated an audition date. 

Dance​ 

The dance round will focus strongly on performance skills.  This will consist of a jazz class which will include:-  ​ 

• A warm-up. ​ 

• Technical corner work including kicks and turns. ​ 

• A short musical theatre choreographed routine. ​ 

• Applicants should ensure they wear appropriate dance clothing and jazz shoes for the class - changing facilities will be available.  

Acting​ 

The acting round will focus on your realisation of character and interpretation of the text.   ​ 

Please prepare two one to two minute memorised monologues. ​ (One should be a Contemporary text.) 

• Choose a piece which interests and challenges you and is age appropriate. ​ 

• Ensure you have researched the piece and can explore the character and context in the room.  ​ 

• The monologues should be performed in your own accent.​ 

• Re-direction may be given by the panel.  You may not be required to perform both monologues.  

Vocal​ 

The vocal round will focus strongly on performance skills, considering technical ability and acting through song. ​ 

Please prepare two contrasting songs (1-2 minutes) of your own choice:

• Songs should be from a musical and demonstrate a narrative journey. ​ 

• When cutting each song, pick a section which shows off your voice. ​ 

• An accompanist will be available on the audition day – backing tracks are not permitted.  You may not be required to perform both songs.
